Nature inspired, textures, colours, cosy comforts, trendy designs, food to die for and accessories to make your head spin… Decorex 2017 delivered on everything.
Walking away from the Johannesburg installation of this leading decor and design showcase, we know one thing for sure: South Africa is overflowing with both raw and established talent in the design and decor industry. At Decorex 2017 a fresh approach to lifestyle solutions incorporated global trends in a uniquely South African design language.
A particularly creative take on South African tradition was DEKAT’s feature designer K INTERIORS, whose Pierneef-inspired exhibition stood out for its use of rich colours and textures with artworks from this treasure in the South African art landscape.
The K Interiors/DEKAT stand took top honours at the Decorex 2017 Johannesburg awards in the highly contested Shell Scheme category.
Inspired by the March 2017 DEKAT cover – a modern take on one of Pierneef’s most popular works – principal designer Karen Richards paid homage to this South African icon. “Although Pierneef passed away 60 years ago, his work is still incredibly strong and relevant, and we were extremely proud to bring this to life in our Pierneef-inspired stand,” says Karen.
“There is a global trend to return to your heritage when it comes to creating your living spaces and to this extent you will – at least in Africa – see a return to African-inspired design trends, but in a contemporary and abstract way with the use of prints and textures,” Karen explains, adding that it was a privilege to be involved with a project that honours a true South African heritage legacy in Pierneef.
“When selecting the artwork for our stand and paging through his portfolio, I was transported to an era of luxury and distinct quality. Through the use of royal colours such as emerald green and purple, paired on our stand with textures like velvet, copper, marble and crystal, I believe we succeeded in creating a space that oozed opulence and quality but was also trendy, modern and eclectic,” she says.
The brave use of rich textures, bold colours and exquisite fabrics made the K Interiors/DEKAT activation at Decorex 2017 a standout performer. “The attention to detail, clever space planning and bold choices when it comes to fabrics and wall solutions gives this stand a unique traditional – and even colonial – feel, but with a surprising eclectic, modern edge,” said the Decorex Awards panel.
