Prof. Elain Vlok – voorslag in die voorste linie

As daar nou mens in hierdie land is wat jy op ’n voetstuk wil plaas en “navolgenswaardig” oor haar wil stempel, is dit prof. Elain Vlok.  Dié stigter en stuurvrou van Clover se Clover Mama Afrika-projek ryg die een toekenning ná die ander in – vir die bemagtiging van vroue en die opheffing van gemeenskappe.

Haar mees onlangse toekenning in dié verband was die Gender Mainstreaming Award van Price Waterhouse Cooper vir ʼn genoteerde maatskappy – wat Clover erkenning gee vir sy bemagtiging van vroue.

Behalwe dat dié Potchefstroomse boorling die land deurkruis om Clover-mamas touwys te maak oor onder meer handwerk, tuinmaak, bak- en kookkuns, selfs sweiswerk, staan sy sedert November ook ‘ma’ vir Clover se wêreldgehalte Besoekersentrum (Clover Visitors Centre) Clayville wat teen Februarie 2017 ten volle operasioneel sal wees.

“Besprekings vir besoeke kan aanlyn gedoen word en verbruikers, skoliere, beleggers, verskaffers, ens. sal die geleentheid hê om Clover se melk- en sapfabrieke van binne af te kan beskou.  Tetrapak, Nampak en Dairypack neem ook ruimte op om aan die besoekers te wys hoe word karton- en plastiekverpakkings vervaardig,” verduidelik sy.

Nes daar geen einde is aan haar geesdrif vir haar werk, vir Clover en veral vir voorheen benadeelde vroue en gemeenskappe nie, is haar gawes en talente ook onbeperk.  Behalwe dat sy reeds twee doktorsgrade op kerfstok het, onder andere in kommunikasie (aan Noordwes-Universiteit waar sy ook lank dosent was), werk sy flink aan ’n derde, juis oor die Clover Mama Afrika-projek.

Aan die tuisfront is sy ook ’n voorslag soos min: van blomme rangskik, kwilt en koekversiering (uit die boeke!), tot mosaïek- en kralewerk – haar hande staan vir niks verkeerd nie.  Dan praat mens nie eers van haar talent as motiveringspreker nie. Met ’n persoonlikheid wat lewenslus uitstraal, is Elain Vlok vir een en almal ’n onuitputlike bron van inspirasie!

En ja, by Clover sal sy graag tot in lengte van dae wil bly, want sy is trots om deel te wees van dié maatskappy waar sy al langer as ’n kwarteeu werk, beklemtoon sy.  Aan die ander kant pluk Clover weer die vrugte van haar daadkrag en entoesiasme, soos duidelik blyk uit die volgende ‘getuigskrif’ oor die suksesse van Clover Mama Afrika:

CLOVER MAMA AFRIKA UNPARALLED SUCCESS

Launched in October 2014, Clover Mama Afrika has appointed well over 40 Clover Mama Afrikas to date, collectively caring for over 15 500 children and more than 2 500 elderly.

Clover Mama Afrika trained 1934 individuals in viable skills such as:

  • sewing
  • bread baking
  • quilting
  • food gardening
  • mosaic
  • an egg laying project
  • welding
  • cooking
  • baking
  • flower arranging
  • hairdressing
  • crocheting

These individuals transferred their skills to more than 8 500 fellow members.

There are no fewer than 383 members permanently employed.

The project has achieved over R45 million worth of free publicity which has introduced leads for additional sponsors/donors and potential new Mamas.

  • PMR Corporate Diamond Arrow Award on a yearly basis since 2008
  • FoodBev SETA Baobab Award in 2010

Tangible results of sustainability

  • Clover Mama Afrikas are providing employment to never less than 364 fellow members.
  • Boosting skills has boosted growth – regular training is required to maintain quality results.
  • Investment compared to income generated by Clover Mamas for last financial year is 106%.
  • Identifying new ways of supporting Clover Mamas (e.g.: Clean Scene projects)

Key successes

  • Winning prestigious awards created top recognition, as a result Clover Mama Afrika has set a benchmark for flagship CSI programmes in SA.
