Entering a living space should be a sensory stimulation, imparting a story about the resident that sets the tone for the remainder of the home. Inspirational young designer, Dylan Thomaz, will be bringing this belief to life at Decorex Cape Town, as the Designer Spotlight Invitee, CTICC from 27 to 30 April.

“I believe that your space should tell the story of who you are,” explained Thomaz of Cape Town-based Stuido Dylan Thomaz. “What you love most, collected and saved up for. All your objects, finds, hand-me-downs should spell out who you are in the world, curated in a unique way. There isn’t a single item in my home that doesn’t have a story behind it. The story matters, and this inspires me every day.”

For more than a decade, Thomaz has worked in the retail, interior design and marketing industries, establishing the Studio Dylan Thomaz in 2015. He describes the studio as a platform for the manifestation of his passion to ‘create well-curated and inspiring spaces’, accessible to everyone.

For the past few months, Thomaz has been crafting the narrative for a living room and dining space installation that will be revealed at Decorex Cape Town. Drawing inspiration from the ‘everyday South African’ Thomaz said his unique style, merging old and new world into a harmonious space, will dictate the overall feature.

“The stand will have elements of old and new all wrapped up in the studio’s signature style, while utilising product from one of South Africa’s most iconic household brands,” he said. “Visitors can also expect to see a few of 2017’s décor trends which will be incorporated in an inspiring manner.”

Two of this year’s trends that will unravel in the feature are ‘greenery’ and ‘texture’. “Every space I create always has greenery,” he continued. “It symbolises life and refreshment while giving every space a real sense of depth.”

To counterbalance the overwhelming contact with electronics that consume the office and work space, Thomaz will bring in various textures. “We spend too much time looking at flat screens and touching electronics. Interiors with textures help to soothe the senses while also adding intrigue to any space.”

Studio Dylan Thomaz will be collaborating with renowned furniture company, Coricraft, on the installation. “Good design should be accessible to everyone and what better way to showcase this than through a partnership with a leading South African furniture brand,” said Thomaz. “I believe in ‘statement pieces’ which express a part of our lives. Coricraft has a number of fantastic items which I will be experimenting with at Decorex.”

Craig Schneeberger, COO of Coricraft, said they were excited to be collaborating with a designer of such talent. “Dylan is using the ‘Everyday South African’ as inspiration for the installation and, to achieve this, he will incorporate various Coricraft products into the stand, particularly our range of occasional furniture,” explained Schneeberger. “It’s set to be an exceptional showcase and we’re really looking forward to the completed piece.”

Commenting on South Africa’s premier décor, design and lifestyle exhibition, Thomaz said it was ‘great honour’ being included on this platform. “The show is so respected across the industry and it really gives Studio Dylan Thomaz a chance to inspire good design to anybody and everybody.”
